SPCC Atlanta AHEC Community Service Programs

A Day of Service

In partnership with Morehouse School of Medicine’s Prevention Research Center (PRC), we provided some of our local high school students with the opportunity to witness a Community Needs Assessment presentation. From this presentation, students learned of some of the health disparities that plague their own communities. This exposure sparked a great excitement in students to conduct research on diabetes and high blood pressure, which are two of the most prevalent health issues impacting senior citizens in their communities. To further the impact upon providing underserved populations with quality disease prevention research, students engaged in “A Day of Service” Community Service Program. The students developed, coordinated, and delivered two interactive skit presentations to an audience of 40 senior citizens at the Senior Center of Thomasville Heights in Southeast Atlanta. In their skit presentations, students provided answers to the following questions:

  1. How does diabetes and high blood pressure impact older adults?
  2. How can we as high school students encourage older adults to prevent obtaining diabetes and high blood pressure?
  3. What are benefits of healthy eating and exercise for older adults?

The senior citizens even had an opportunity to contribute too by awarding the students with Best Acting Star Awards for their creativity and acting skills. This program has proved to be an enjoyable success for both the students and senior citizens for the past several years.
